Nobody likes being caught in a submission, much more tapping out to one. In this video, BJJ World Champion and ONE Championship Superstar Leandro “Brodinho” Issa shows us three simple ways to escape the triangle choke:
1) Posture up
Posturing up while in the triangle is, by far, the easiest way to escape. Make sure your hips are completely under your opponent’s and look up to make it difficult for them to finish the submission. As you escape, snake your free arm in while continuing to look forward.
2) Arm under and jump over to side control
Punch your arm all the way down and under them, breaking your opponent’s angle. This will force them to switch into an omoplata. As they move into the omoplata, use your arm as a tripod and cartwheel your legs to the other side. Establish side control as soon as you have it.
3) Leg pull
Move towards your opponent’s left leg, tucking your chin in at the same time. With your free hand, grab the knee and push your head through. This will force them to break the triangle and get back into closed guard.
As with executing any move in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or submission grappling, the key is to stay three steps ahead of your opponent. Be aware of any moves that signal a submission is coming. If you can avoid being caught, great. But if not, try any of these three escapes!
